Yes, it's true

We planned a wedding in less than 24 hours.

On February 13th, I received a call from my friend Karen telling me she had proposed to her partner Frances, and that he accepted. They were getting married on Valentine's Day ~ it was less than 24 hours away.

Where do we start? A clear mind and a good focus was what was needed.

What did we do?

Karen is a florist so her wonderful designer Clair went to work creating a beautiful bouquet.

As well as floral arrangements at her shop A Sea of Bloom, they sell an assortment of jewelry. Karen and Frances were able to purchase two unique rings right from her shop.

Food was arranged with the Sooke Harbour House in a very short window, working with the head chef. Special thanks to them for being so accommodating. The wedding cake was made by Deb Turner ~ Cakes Galore

Special thanks to Scott Osselton for making a delicious breakfast for the bride and her daughter, a great way to start the day!

The ceremony was preformed by Brenda Parkinson in front of the Sea of Bloom Flower Shop. Along with family and friends, Check 6 News participated in the event.

Preparing for winter storms

■ Listen to your radio or television for winter storm forecasts and other information.

■ Prepare your home for cold weather.

Install storm windows. Insulate outside walls, attics and crawl spaces. Wrap pipes, especially those near cold outer walls or in attics or crawl spaces. Repair leaks in the roof, around the doors and in the windows.

■ Have appropriate cold weather clothing available.

■ If you have a kerosene heater, refuel your heater outside and remember to keep it at least three feet from flammable objects.

■ Make sure your fireplace functions properly.

■ Have rock salt and sand on hand for traction on ice.

■ Fill your gas tank before the snow starts falling.

During a winter storm

■ Wear several layers of loose fitting, light weight, warm clothing rather than one layer of heavy clothing. Wear mittens rather than gloves. Wear a warm, woolen cap.

■ Do not drive unnecessarily.

■ Reduce the temperature in your home to conserve fuel.

■ Heat only the areas of your home you are using. Close doors and curtains or cover windows and doors with blankets.

Christmas At Sooke Ocean Resort

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. As I walked through the stores just after Halloween I was reminded that the Christmas season was just around the corner and realized that in less than 6 weeks I would be hanging stockings and setting up the tree.

Our tree at Sooke Ocean Resort is 14' high and takes several strings of lights as well as many decorations. Last year we used over 400 decorations on the tree. I have to admit putting it up was way more fun than having to take it down. The question is Am I looking forward to putting up the tree again this year? YES, of course....Christmas time in one of my favorite times of the year. It's not about the shopping or the gifts we receive and give .... to me it's sharing time with friends and family that means the most. It's about spending time with loved ones ~ sharing friendships ~ and being together. In fact the I believe the best gift of all is the gift of giving yourself along with friendship, love and family.

So this season when you are thinking of gift giving think of sharing a little more of yourself .... volunteer for your child's school PAC, become a member of your local Chamber of Commerce, bake some cookies for a neighbour and enjoy the holiday spirit!
