Sooke (population: 11,000), overlooks a secluded harbour at the south-western tip of Vancouver Island, “where the rainforest meets the sea.” Whiffin Spit, a protrusion nearly 1.5 km (1 mi) long, protects the community from the powerful waves of the Juan de Fuca Strait. Sooke is the gateway to the West Coast; the origin of yellow-bloomed Scotch Broom shrubs that now grow as far south as California and as far north as Alaska; and the site of some of the best salmon fishing, surfing and birding on Vancouver Island’s west coast.
